A freight forwarder organises your shipment: pickup, export customs, space on a ship or plane, documents and, if you want, delivery to your door. A good forwarder saves you money and stress. A poor one costs you both.

Questions to ask before you book
- Which Chinese ports and destinations do you ship to every week?
- Is the quote all-in? Which charges are at origin, which at destination, and which are “at cost”?
- Who clears customs at my end, and who is my contact there?
- Can you consolidate goods from several suppliers?
- Do you offer cargo insurance, and what does it cover?
- How do I follow my shipment, and who do I call if something goes wrong?
Comparing quotes fairly
- Compare the same Incoterm, route and volume.
- List destination charges (terminal handling, documentation, delivery): a low freight rate can hide high charges at your end.
- Ask for the validity date. Rates move often.
Warning signs
- A price far below everyone else with no clear list of charges.
- Pressure to pay a personal account.
- No written terms or insurance options.
